2026 UC Gundam Rewatch

Archiving the Dark History

Foreword:

At the dawn of April of 2026, I found myself craving to revisit Mobile Suit Gundam, as I often do. What made this instance different was that, having just left behind an especially debilitating depressive episode, I felt imbued with a sort of second wind, which gave me the motivation needed to go through not only a specific, preferred show, but the entirety of what I considered my personal canon of favorites within the Universal Century timeline.

I decided to get to it as quickly as I could, and – while watching the first episode of the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), I picked up on a few details I found worth noting down, which in turn spawned the desire to consolidate my thoughts into a essay to be published over the course of my journey, the first to be published to this blog. I thought it would make for a fun project, and after wrapping up my first session, I began working on this essay.

Let it be known that the purpose of my writing this is not to make an all-encompassing review of the show and its “quality” but rather a compilation of how I interpret what is being presented. This means the actual contents of this essay will be very selective and I may miss or outright skip certain aspects of the art I describe.

Spoilers ahead, duh.
